In 1919, Kathe and Eugen Beurer lived in poor conditions on Frauenstrasse 57 in Ulm. But the couple, especially Kathe Beurer as the driving force, had an idea, a vision: as an alternative to the then very common hot water bottle, electric heating pads would provide people with a pleasant warmth in the future. A very practical invention in times when central heating was not a standard feature of the house. Heinrich Stanger from Reutlingen became acquainted with the production of heating pads in the USA and after returning to Ulm in 1908 he started the production of the first models in Germany. Appropriate expertise was available when Kathe Beurer and her husband embarked on self-employment in 1919. Despite all the difficult circumstances, "production" began, albeit initially in modest conditions. The first units were made using two sewing machines in their bedroom at home.

Tungsram, located in Hungary, is known for its light bulbs and electronics. Founded in Najstpest (now part of Budapest, Hungary) in 1896, it originally produced telephones, wires and switchboards. Before the nationalization of the Communist government in 1945, the company was the world's third largest manufacturer of light bulbs and radio tubes, after the American companies General Electric and RCA. On December 13, 1904, the Hungarian Sandor Just and the Croatian Franjo Hanaman received the Hungarian patent no. 34541 for the world's first tungsten filament lamp that lasted longer and produced stronger light than carbon filament. The co-inventors licensed their patent to the company, which was named Tungsram after the eponymous incandescent bulb, which in many European countries is also called the Tungsram bulb. [Citation required] In 1934, Tungsram incorporated Imre Brody's patent for krypton gas-filled light bulbs, which allowed the light bulb to last longer. During the First World War, mass production of radio tubes began and became the most profitable division of the company. Hungarian physicist Bai Zoltan, together with Giorgi Szigeti, turned off the LED lighting in 1939 and patented a SiC-based lighting device in Hungary, with the option of boron carbide, which emits white, yellowish or greenish white depending on the impurities present. British Tunngsram Radio Works was a subsidiary of Hungarian Tungsram in the pre-war days. In 1990, General Electric acquired a majority stake in Tungsram and invested $ 600 million in the venture over six years, fundamentally restructuring every aspect of its business. To date, this is the largest investment in the production of an American company in Central and Eastern Europe. Tungsram is today a subsidiary of General Electric and the name has only been retained as a brand. Since February 2018, the director of GE Hungary, Jorg Bauer, has agreed to buy the GEʼ lighting company in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Turkey, as well as its global automotive lighting business. The business continues to operate again under the name Tungsram Group. From February 2020, the company’s business partners were able to use the recently opened Tungsram lounge at Ferenc Liszt International Airport with conference rooms.
